Focusing on the core aspiration of "Making AI helpful for everyone", Google has re-oriented its products, its research focus and even its ultimate corporate agenda around the notion that AI should have everyday, pedestrian applications - not simply as an impossibly complex technical body of work, but as a device that enables the lives, work and knowledge of everyday people to be enhanced.
A Mission Rooted in Organizing Information
Google's original mission was to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful. In its recent statements about its AI strategy, the company has characterized artificial intelligence as a natural evolution of that mission rather than a detour from it. As Google explains, we reoriented ourselves around AI roughly six years ago because AI helps people, businesses, and communities unlock their potential, opening opportunities that could meaningfully improve billions of lives. Viewed like this, the large language models, image generators, and AI-powered search tools come into focus as tools designed to evolve Google's original mission.
The company has also admitted that the advances happening with AI seem to be occurring at an " extraordinary " rate. The size of the largest AI computations has been doubling every six months, even faster than the rate of Moore's law, which predicted the doubling of computer power every two years. Finally, Google has situated helpfulness not only as a matter of convenience but also of inclusion. The company has pointed to accessibility tools driven by AI that aim to assist people who may be left behind by digital transformation, such as the Live Transcribe feature on Android phones, which transcribes speech into dozens of languages for people who are deaf or hard of hearing, or Pixel phone's Conversation Mode, which employs machine learning on the device to filter out background noise in busy venues. Google has also indicated that it is investigating how AI may be used to aid management decisions for breast cancer and other diseases more generally, using medical imaging as one example of opportunities in which AI pattern-recognition can have a real benefit to patients and not just be a solution in the realm of computation.
A Long-Term Bet on Responsible Deployment
Alchemy and Google CEO Sundar Pichai has consistently positioned AI not simply as a feature addition-an element of products-but as key to the company's-and the world's-future. Speaking about Google's next quarter-century, Pichai has stated that empowering AI to be more useful to all, while ensuring its deployment is safe is the surest way to realize the firm's mission for the years ahead. He has characterized AI as "the biggest technological shift of our time" potentially on the same level as (or greater than) the adoption of the internet, or the transition from the desktop to a smartphone.
Pichai also puts this in remarkably long-term terms, arguing that if we remember it as an idiotically profound teenager in 2048 he would look back on everything as something enabled by AIt would be the normal state of operation, 2 normal, and so checking out as a success, given how much of a feat it was to make some wonderful thing, thing. This is a guiding principle of Google: that the real achievement of AI is not in how much you awe everyone with it now, but in how naturally it comes to people so they stop thinking about it.
Tools for Developers, Not Just Consumers
The story of how Google is making AI helpful also applies to developers. Google's developer-oriented AI platforms speak of their aim to "offer developers suitable models for creating new apps and through tools that "help them write code more quickly and easily" in a way that is all "easy to use on any device or platform. An example is Google's open source initiative of the Gemma family of lightweight AI models for general use cases in creating apps and for specialised applications such as classifying medical images.
A Consistent Thread
Putting all this together you end up with a picture of a company trying to forge a new service from AI: in effect just human, information and consumption is now so cheap it will become as normal and indispensable as electricity or the web. Whatever the market, search, access, health or developer tools - the core is always the same: AI is not a standalone product but an addition built on top of everything else we do. Whether that is how users see it is up to others to judge but certainly from the company's point of view that is the sort of brand they want to develop - and they believe that AI should be judged not in the light of its novelty but on how useful it is.
